Background of the Study
Intercultural communication has become increasingly significant in Onitsha, where the Igbo language serves as a bridge between diverse cultural groups. In this dynamic setting, semantic interpretation is continually influenced by the interaction of various cultural norms and linguistic practices. Intercultural exchanges encourage the infusion of new expressions, idioms, and contextual meanings into Igbo, leading to an evolving semantic landscape (Chima, 2024). Such interactions not only enrich the language but also pose challenges, as meanings may shift when conveyed between individuals from different cultural backgrounds. The study explores how intercultural communication practices affect the interpretation of Igbo semantics, focusing on areas such as business, education, and social interactions. By examining real-life communication scenarios in Onitsha, the research aims to identify how intercultural dynamics contribute to both enhanced understanding and potential semantic ambiguities. As globalization intensifies and diverse cultures converge in urban centers, understanding these semantic shifts is essential for promoting effective communication and preserving the linguistic heritage of the Igbo people (Eke, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Intercultural communication in Onitsha has led to significant shifts in the semantic interpretation of the Igbo language. While cultural exchange enriches language use, it also introduces semantic ambiguities that can hinder clear communication. Differences in cultural norms and language backgrounds may lead to divergent interpretations of the same expressions, creating potential misunderstandings in professional and social settings (Chima, 2024). Additionally, the rapid pace of cultural convergence in urban areas like Onitsha exacerbates these challenges, as traditional semantic meanings are continually reshaped by external influences (Eke, 2023). This study seeks to address the lack of a standardized framework for managing semantic variations arising from intercultural interactions, aiming to enhance communication clarity while respecting cultural diversity.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the influence of intercultural communication on Igbo semantic interpretation.
To identify common sources of semantic ambiguity in intercultural settings.
To propose strategies to improve clarity in Igbo communication amid cultural diversity.
Research Questions
How does intercultural communication affect semantic interpretation in Igbo?
What are the primary causes of semantic ambiguity in intercultural exchanges?
What measures can mitigate misinterpretations in Igbo interactions?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of intercultural communication on the semantic interpretation of Igbo in Onitsha, offering insights into how cultural diversity shapes language use. The findings will help educators, business leaders, and policymakers foster more effective communication strategies that bridge cultural gaps. By addressing semantic ambiguities, the research contributes to enhanced understanding and preservation of Igbo linguistic heritage in a globalized environment (Chima, 2024; Eke, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing the impact of intercultural communication on semantic interpretation in the Igbo language in Onitsha and does not extend to other regions or languages.
